Boost Creative Thinking By Walking

Dear Reader,

Many people are looking for ways to improve creativity, and new research suggests that that walking may be an all natural creativity booster. Now there's another reason for getting up, and getting active - you'll be more creative, find more innovative solutions to problems. Researchers from Stanford University compared levels of creativity in subjects as they walked to levels as that same person sat - turns out creative output went up by an amazing average of 60% when walking.

The study included four different experiments and used 176 recruited college students and other adults, asking them to complete creative tasks that are routinely used by researchers to measure creative output. They put the subjects in various conditions, comparing non-aerobic walking to sitting both inside and outside. For their turn outside, the sitters were pushed in wheelchairs around a preset path on the Stanford campus to give them the same visual movement as walking.

This is one of the first studies to look at the effect of non-aerobic walking on generating new ideas and compare that state to sitting. In three of the experiments the researchers looked at divergent thinking, the name for generating ideas by thinking about many possible solutions, for instance as many possible uses for an object as possible. In all cases, the vast majority of the subjects scored higher on divergent thinking while walking than while seated.

The fourth experiment of the series looked at a more complex kind of creativity, responding to a prompt with complex analogies. Walking outside caused all the participants to generate at least one high quality complex analogy, compared to just 50% when sitting inside.

Turns out, the simple act of walking is all it takes to fire up the creativity... get inspired. You can be inside or outdoors. In fact, during one experiment the team saw that compared to sitting, walking inside on a treadmill facing a blank wall, or walking outside in the fresh air both brought two times as many creative responses. It's the action, not the setting that matters.

The effect of walking (inside or out) on creative output appears to linger for a time, even if you sit down just after you finish your walk. The creative juices keep flowing for a bit.

Boost Creative Thinking By Walking Continued...

This seems to back the claims of many people that they have some of their best ideas while walking. Both the late Steven Jobs, co-founder of Apple, and Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook have been known to hold walking meetings.

The findings on walking and creative output appear in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory and Cognition. This research has experts wondering if walking is the only activity that works... or would any mild physical exertion do? More work is needed to find the underlying causes for walking impacting creativity so that we can start to understand how the body might be influencing the mind.

If all this isn't enough to get you up and walking... here's more. A study from April 2013 has found that walking can cut heart risk as much as running does. After comparing 33,060 runners and 15,045 walkers, experts concluded that brisk walking can cut your risk of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol just as well as running can do. Good news for all of us trying to keep fit and looking for easy, affordable ways to do so.

To your good health,
